Canva began as a browser-based design tool for non-designers and has become a full “Visual Suite” of presentations, documents, whiteboards, video, sheets and websites. Its AI layer, once marketed mainly as Magic Studio, is now presented as Canva AI: a conversational design partner inside the editor, sitting alongside familiar tools such as Magic Write and Magic Resize. This review looks at what Canva documents today, how its AI allowances work and who gets the most from each plan.

What it is

Canva is a design platform available on the web, desktop and mobile. Users start from templates or a blank canvas and produce social posts, presentations, videos, documents and print materials. Canva AI is built across that suite: users describe what they want by text or voice, then refine the result through conversation or by editing elements directly. Our Canva directory entry gives a short overview.

Key features

  • Canva AI. Canva describes it as a creative partner that works “from first idea to final design”. It can generate designs, images, charts and headlines, pull context from connected tools, search the web for information to bring into a design, and learn a brand’s fonts, colours and rules. Tasks can be scheduled to run later or on a recurring basis.
  • Magic Studio tools. Canva’s pages list Magic Write for text, Magic Resize for adapting a design to other formats, Magic Layers for turning flat images into editable layers, Magic Animate, Magic Video for quick social edits, and Magic Formulas and Magic Insights in Canva Sheets.
  • Canva Code. Generates interactive content such as quizzes and activities, which Canva promotes for education.
  • Photo and video tools. Background removal, image clean-up and enhancement, and AI voice for video.
  • Brand controls. Brand kits, approval workflows and team collaboration on Business, plus Org Admin controls over AI tools on Business and Enterprise.
  • Canva Shield. Canva’s umbrella for AI safety, privacy and security, including indemnification for Enterprise customers with more than 100 seats.

Pricing

At the time of writing (October 2026), Canva’s plan comparison lists the following US prices:

Plan Price AI allowance Highlights
Free $0 Up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month Core editor and templates
Pro $12/month billed yearly ($144/year), or $18 month-to-month About 10x Free, including Premium or Ultra AI 100 GB storage, full access to AI tools
Business $20.83/person/month billed yearly ($250/year), or $25 month-to-month About 20x Free Brand controls, approvals, 500 GB storage per person
Enterprise Custom About 20x Free Admin, security and indemnification

Prices vary by region. Canva’s help centre says the AI Pass add-on costs USD $100 per person per month and gives 40x more AI on Pro or 20x more on Business. Standard AI tools on paid plans, and design tools such as Magic Write, photo and video animations and AI Voice, do not count towards the AI allowance.

Strengths

Accessibility is Canva’s biggest strength. Its AI arrives inside an editor that a large share of marketers, teachers and small businesses already use, so there is little to learn. A conversational assistant that produces an editable design, not a flat image, is a practical step beyond prompt-only image generators.

The breadth of the suite helps. One subscription covers social graphics, presentations, video, documents and spreadsheets, so AI features work across formats rather than in one tool. Magic Resize and Magic Layers address common production chores rather than novelty.

Canva has also been open about its own model work; our case study on how Canva trained an image model on design templates explains that approach. Its FAQ states that, between the user and Canva, users own the designs they generate.

Limitations

AI use is metered. Allowances are described as multiples of the free tier and depend on whether a tool counts as Standard, Premium or Ultra, so it is hard to know in advance how many generations a month a plan supports. Users who hit the limit are offered an upgrade or the $100-a-month AI Pass, a large jump from a $12 Pro plan.

Commercial rights carry caveats. Canva says it does not guarantee AI-generated images, designs or text are cleared for use, especially where output resembles existing works, and that users may not have exclusive rights to AI-generated designs. Brands should check outputs before using them in campaigns. Our explainer on whether AI-generated work can be copyrighted covers the background.

Canva is a template-led tool. Professional designers needing fine typographic and layout control may still prefer dedicated software, which Canva itself recognizes by offering its separate Affinity design software to subscribers.

Who it’s for

  • Small businesses and solo marketers who need on-brand social posts, ads and presentations quickly.
  • Teachers and students, who get dedicated AI tools for lessons and activities.
  • Marketing teams that need brand kits, approvals and shared templates.
  • Non-designers who want AI help without learning professional software.

Alternatives

  • Adobe Firefly — generative imaging tied into Adobe’s creative apps.
  • Figma — collaborative interface and product design with AI features.
  • Gamma — AI-first presentations and documents.

Verdict

Canva earns 4.5 out of 5. Its documented AI features are broad, practical and built into an editor that is easy to learn, and the Pro plan is inexpensive for what it includes. Business adds sensible brand and admin controls. We hold back half a point because AI use is governed by allowances that are hard to predict, the step up to AI Pass is steep, and Canva leaves the responsibility for checking the commercial suitability of AI output with the user.
