How we review: this assessment is based on the product’s official documentation, current pricing and published independent evaluations; it is not a hands-on test. Read our review methodology.
ElevenLabs started as a text-to-speech service and has grown into a broad voice AI platform: speech generation, voice cloning, transcription, dubbing, sound effects, music and conversational voice agents. This review looks at what the company’s documentation and pricing pages describe today, and who gets the most from it.
What it is
ElevenLabs is a platform for generating and understanding speech. Its documentation groups the offer into a no-code web app for voiceovers, music, dubs and studio projects (ElevenCreative), a platform for building voice agents (ElevenAgents), a developer API with official Python and TypeScript SDKs (ElevenAPI), and Reception.ai, a ready-made AI phone receptionist for small businesses. Our ElevenLabs directory entry has a summary.
Key features
- Text-to-speech models. The documentation lists several, each with a different trade-off:
- Eleven v4 — described as the most expressive, with 90+ languages and up to 10,000 characters per request.
- Eleven v4 Turbo — for real-time use, with a median latency of about 100 ms.
- Eleven v3 and v3 Conversational — expressive delivery in 70+ languages.
- Eleven Multilingual v2 — described as the most stable for long-form content, in 29 languages.
- Eleven Flash v2.5 — the fastest and cheapest, about 75 ms latency, 32 languages and 50% lower API price per character.
- Speech-to-text (Scribe). Scribe v2 transcribes in 90+ languages with word-level timestamps, diarization for up to 32 speakers and keyterm prompting; a realtime version and a medical version are also offered.
- Voice cloning and design. Instant and professional voice cloning, voice design from a description, and a library of more than 10,000 voices.
- Voice agents. ElevenAgents supports support agents with knowledge bases, phone lines via Twilio or SIP, batch outbound calling and website widgets.
- Other audio tools. Dubbing, sound effects, music generation, text to dialogue, voice changer, voice isolator and forced alignment.
- Private deployment. Agents, TTS and STT can run inside a customer’s own cloud account.

Strengths
Breadth is ElevenLabs’ main strength. Few competitors cover speech generation, cloning, transcription, dubbing, music and agents on one account with one API. For a creator producing narrated video, or a company building a phone agent, that means fewer vendors and consistent voices across products.
Model choice is unusually well documented. Instead of one model, ElevenLabs publishes a set with clear trade-offs — expressiveness, long-form stability, or latency — together with language counts and character limits. Developers can pick Flash for real-time agents and v4 for audiobook-style narration.
The entry price is low. A commercial licence and instant voice cloning at $6 a month makes the platform accessible to independent creators. Our guide to AI text-to-speech and voice cloning explains how to compare these services.
Limitations
Credits run out quickly on long projects. About 121 minutes of speech a month on Creator is fine for short videos, but an audiobook or a high-volume support line quickly pushes users towards the $99 and $299 tiers or the API.
Language support varies by model. The most stable long-form model supports 29 languages, while the newest expressive models list 90+. Teams need to check that the model they want supports every language they need.
Cloning raises real risks. Voice cloning is also the technology behind many scam calls and audio deepfakes. ElevenLabs’ documentation says users must confirm they have the rights to any voice they clone, and Professional Voice Cloning adds a spoken verification step that compares the uploader’s voice with the training audio — though the company acknowledges this cannot guarantee ownership, and instant cloning relies mainly on the user’s attestation. Anyone using it in production should document consent and disclose synthetic voices. Our explainer on AI scam calls and texts covers the other side of this technology.
Who it’s for
- Video creators, podcasters and audiobook producers who need natural narration.
- Developers building voice agents, accessibility features or real-time speech.
- Media and localization teams that need dubbing across languages.
- Businesses wanting phone agents or a ready-made AI receptionist.
Alternatives
- Speechify — text-to-speech focused on reading and listening.
- Descript — audio and video editing with built-in voice features.
- Synthesia — AI avatars and video with voiceover.
Verdict
ElevenLabs earns 4.5 out of 5. Its documented toolkit is the broadest in voice AI, its model line-up is clearly explained, and the low-cost Starter plan includes commercial use and cloning. We hold back half a point because credit-based pricing becomes expensive for long-form or high-volume work and because the power of its cloning tools demands responsible-use processes that buyers must put in place themselves.
