How we review: this assessment is based on the product’s official documentation, current pricing and published independent evaluations; it is not a hands-on test. Read our review methodology.
QuillBot made its name with a single tool — a paraphraser that rewrites sentences in different styles — and became a fixture of student life. Today it bundles that paraphraser with a grammar checker, summarizer, plagiarism checker, AI detector and “humanizer”, all under one low-cost Premium subscription. QuillBot is also a sister brand of LanguageTool, which now points its free users to QuillBot’s extension. This review assesses QuillBot as described on its official pages and help center.
What it is
QuillBot is a web-based writing toolkit centred on rewriting your own text. You paste or type a passage and choose how it should be rephrased — more fluent, more formal, shorter and so on — then refine the result with grammar suggestions or condense longer documents with the summarizer. It runs on the web, as browser extensions for Chrome and Edge, as a Microsoft Word add-in, as a macOS app and on mobile. See our QuillBot directory entry for a short summary.
Key features
- Paraphraser. Free users get the Standard and Fluency modes; Premium unlocks the full set of modes, custom modes, side-by-side mode comparison and paraphrase history. QuillBot says the paraphraser works in more than 20 languages, with several English variants.
- Grammar checker. Inline grammar and spelling corrections, also available in the browser extensions and Word.
- Summarizer. Condenses articles and documents: up to 1,200 words per input on the free plan and 6,000 words on Premium.
- Plagiarism checker. Premium-only, with 25,000 words of scanning a month and extra word packs for purchase.
- AI detector. Free scans of up to 1,200 words, up to six times a day; Premium removes those limits.
- AI humanizer. Rewrites text to sound more natural, with short texts free and no limits on Premium.
- Citation generator and translator. Supporting tools for academic work.
Pricing
At the time of writing (October 2026), QuillBot’s official pages list Premium at:
| Billing | Price |
|---|---|
| Annual | $99.95 a year (about $8.33 a month) |
| Monthly | $19.95 a month |
QuillBot also offers team and student plans, and a shorter multi-month option that its own pages describe inconsistently, so check the checkout page. One variant of the official Premium page shows a different annual rate ($9.16 a month), which may reflect regional or test pricing. QuillBot’s FAQ describes a money-back guarantee for new Premium subscribers within a short window after purchase; confirm the current terms before relying on it.
Strengths
Value is QuillBot’s strongest argument. For around $100 a year, Premium bundles a paraphraser, grammar checker, summarizer, plagiarism checker, AI detector and humanizer — tools that would otherwise mean several separate subscriptions. On annual billing it costs considerably less than many premium writing assistants.
The paraphraser remains the best-known feature for a reason. Multiple modes and side-by-side comparison make it useful for non-native writers trying to find a natural way to say something, and for anyone tightening a clumsy draft. Language support beyond English widens its appeal.
The free tier is functional. Two paraphrasing modes, a free Chrome extension with grammar checking, summaries of up to 1,200 words and limited AI detection give students a lot without payment.
QuillBot’s documentation is also reasonably honest about its detection tools. It states that its AI detector cannot verify whether a piece of writing was created by a human, that it leans towards classifying unclear texts as human-written to reduce false positives, and that its plagiarism checker cannot detect paraphrased content.
Limitations
Paraphrasing carries an integrity risk that no feature can remove. Rewording someone else’s work without attribution is still plagiarism, and many schools restrict paraphrasing and humanizing tools. QuillBot says its humanizer is not meant for evading AI detection, but users must follow their institution’s rules.
The free plan is deliberately narrow. Paraphrasing is limited to short passages — QuillBot’s own pages give both 100 and 125 words — and only two modes, so regular users will hit the paywall quickly.
Detection results are not proof. Independent research has repeatedly shown that AI detectors misclassify text, especially from non-native English writers. A QuillBot score, like any detector’s, should start a conversation rather than settle one.
Pricing details are inconsistent across QuillBot’s own pages, and monthly billing costs more than twice the effective annual rate, which penalizes students who only need it for a term.
Who it’s for
- Students who want an affordable bundle of rewriting, summarizing and citation tools.
- Non-native English writers looking for more natural phrasing.
- Bloggers and content writers tightening drafts on a budget.
- Teachers who want a low-cost plagiarism checker for occasional use.
Alternatives
- Grammarly — broader inline editing and team features, at a higher price; see our Grammarly review.
- LanguageTool — QuillBot’s sister brand, stronger on multilingual grammar and style checking.
- ChatGPT or Claude — general assistants that can paraphrase on request, without dedicated modes.
Verdict
QuillBot earns 3.5 out of 5. Its documented feature set — a flexible paraphraser, grammar checking, summarizing, plagiarism checking and AI detection in one inexpensive subscription — makes Premium good value, particularly for students on annual billing. We deduct a point and a half because the free tier is tight, pricing is presented inconsistently, the plagiarism allowance is modest, and its core use case sits close to academic-integrity lines that users must manage themselves.
