Notion has turned its AI features from a writing helper into a set of agents that can read and change an entire workspace. The trade-off is that those features are now tied to the Business plan and a credit system. This review looks at what Notion documents today and who gets value from it.
What it is
Notion AI is the set of AI features built into Notion, the docs-and-databases workspace. Rather than a separate chatbot, it works on the content you already keep in Notion — pages, wikis, project databases and meeting notes — and, through connectors, on content in other apps. Our Notion AI directory entry summarizes the basics.
Key features
- Notion Agent. A chat assistant that handles multi-step tasks using your Notion content, connected apps and the web. Notion says it can create and edit pages and databases, not just answer questions.
- Custom Agents. Agents that “automate work that repeats”: they run on a trigger or a schedule, and one person can build an agent for the whole team.
- AI Meeting Notes. Transcription, summaries and insights from meetings, without adding a bot to the call.
- Enterprise Search. Search across connected tools such as Slack, Google Drive and GitHub, with answers that cite where information came from. On the Business plan it is labelled beta.
- Model choice. Notion does not name specific models on its product page, but says workspace owners can choose which AI providers are allowed and which models members can pick, and that workflows can switch model or provider without losing context.
- Data controls. A workspace setting controls whether data is shared to improve Notion AI. On Enterprise, Notion offers zero data retention with model providers and HIPAA-compliant processing; other plans have 30-day retention, according to the product page.
Pricing
At the time of writing (October 2026), Notion’s official pricing page shows the following per-member monthly prices (as displayed in euros for European visitors; local currency varies):
| Plan | Price | AI included |
|---|---|---|
| Free | €0 | Trial of Notion AI |
| Plus | €9.50/member/month | Trial of Notion AI |
| Business | €19.50/member/month | Notion Agent, Custom Agents, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (beta); 1,500 Standard and 500 Select credits per seat monthly |
| Enterprise | Custom | Everything in Business plus zero data retention with model providers |
The pricing page says annual billing saves up to 20%. Custom Agents are free to try, then cost $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits.
How credits work. Standard credits are used when Notion picks the model automatically; Select credits are used when you choose a specific model. High-consumption models draw from paid Notion credits from the start, and admins can set per-member limits.
Strengths
Context is Notion AI’s main advantage. A general assistant only knows what you paste into it; Notion’s agent can see your project databases, meeting notes and wiki and act on them directly. For a team that has put its work into Notion, that turns requests like “update the status of every task blocked by the vendor delay” or “draft a weekly summary from this week’s meeting notes” into a single instruction.
Custom Agents are a genuinely useful step. Being able to schedule an agent — for example, to triage a request database every morning — puts Notion closer to workflow-automation tools while keeping the logic next to the content it touches.
Bot-free meeting notes avoid one of the most common complaints about AI note-takers: an extra participant joining calls. And admin control over providers and models will appeal to IT and legal teams. Our explainer on AI meeting note-takers and privacy covers what to check before enabling them.
Limitations
The biggest limitation is access. Free and Plus users only get a trial, so the practical entry point for Notion AI is the Business plan, which costs roughly twice Plus. Individuals and small teams who only want AI writing help will find better value elsewhere.
The credit system is complicated. Standard credits, Select credits and paid Notion credits each have their own rules, and heavier model choices consume them faster. Notion’s help center notes that access may pause when a workspace exceeds its usage until it refreshes, which can disrupt teams that rely on agents.
Enterprise Search remains in beta on Business, and the strongest privacy guarantee — zero data retention with model providers — is reserved for Enterprise.
Who it’s for
- Teams already on Notion that want an assistant with access to their real work.
- Operations and project managers who can use scheduled Custom Agents.
- Organizations that need control over which AI providers process their data.
It is a weak fit for individuals on Free or Plus, or for anyone who does not keep their work in Notion.
Alternatives
- Microsoft 365 Copilot — the equivalent for Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
- Claude — a general assistant that can connect to Notion and other tools via connectors.
- Zapier — if your main goal is automating workflows across many apps.
Verdict
Notion AI earns 4 out of 5. For teams that already live in Notion, the documented combination of a workspace-aware agent, scheduled Custom Agents, bot-free meeting notes and cross-app search is among the most capable on the market. We deduct a point because meaningful access starts only at the Business plan, the credit system adds friction, and key features are still in beta. If your team is on Notion Business already, it is an easy yes; if not, it is not a reason on its own to upgrade.
